The Second Half: Fending off isolation in our 'golden years'
(Excerpt from an article in The Times-Standard,
July 31, 2008 by Tracey Barnes Priestley)
When weather kept us dockside in Pender Harbour for three days, we
had the good fortune to moor at
Fisherman's Resort and Marina. Huge pots of thriving
flowers dotted the docks and a lush lawn complete with shade trees
welcomed us to shore. The owners, Dave and Jennifer,
complemented the entire experience. Always ready with a
genuine smile and seemingly effortless assistance, they moved
through their day as if their only concern was making their guests
feel at home.
And just up the hill? LaVerne's Grill.
With the friendly service and delicious food, this was a popular
spot with both locals and mariners. Owned and operated by
LaVerne herself, one of the friendliest people I've ever come
across, she'd greet us in the morning with a huge smile and a rich
laugh, happy to let our dog lie at our feet while we ate at one of
her spotless outdoor tables. The entire experience felt like
being at a good friend's house, enjoying some great chow.
